A `Green Weekend'

On Saturday Morning we were up really early (about 3.30 am) to set off for a 5.00am meeting at Lake McDonald near Cooroy for a fishing expedition with Alan's brother Geoff and his wife Julie. They also have recently bought kayaks and we all had our fishing permits, kyaks loaded and we were ready to go. The Lake was incredibly beautiful and peaceful at around 6.00 am when we launched the kayaks. Being Saturday morning there were a few boats on the water but as only electric motors are allowed we couldn't hear a thing. There was mist all around and I was able to paddle very close to some pelicans and watch them catching fish for breakfast. We spent about 2 hours on the water, Geoff caught a fish but threw it back, then we all paddled back to base for morning tea. I would have loved to have taken some photos but my camera is not water resistant, let alone waterproof. Note to all my family - when any of you next visit this trip will be on the agenda :) Then last night we went to a showing of Al Gore's movie `An Inconvenient Truth', organised by our local Green's Party. Afterwards Drew Hutton gave a talk and there was a discussion forum. No debate as we were all `converts or disciples' but it was very interesting. I really do fear for the world my grandchildren will grow up to inherit - will they be able to experience the beauty that I did at the Lake on Saturday, will they even have nourishing fresh food to eat - and what about their children and so on. We do what we can here on our small acreage in a small town but there are so many millions of people in the world who would all like to own a car, and to consume energy at the same rate as most of the Developed nations - they have every right to aspire to this but the Planet simply can't sustain it for much longer without some major changes in the way we all live and consume energy. In summary a very interesting film which everyone should see.
